Colonel Khorn Khoeun, Arak Tnort commune police chief, yesterday said six children went for a walk to a cashew farm located about two kilometres from their homes when they spotted a pond on the way.
“They saw the pond near the cashew farm and went for a swim, but four of the six children were drowning and the other two ran into the village to tell their parents,” Col Khoeun said. “Because of the long distance [to reach their homes], the children already passed away when their parents arrived at the scene.”
Col Khoeun noted that two of the children who died were siblings.
The victims were identified as Chun Lita, 12, Chun Chou, 10, Reth Noy, 13, and Hang Hy, 11.
“We are really sorry to hear about what happened and when we went to examine the children’s bodies, we confirmed that they died from drowning,” Col Khoeun said. “After checking the bodies, we sent them back to their families for their respective funerals.”
He noted that the two boys were initially afraid to tell their parents for fear of being blamed.
“The pond is part of a nearby cashew farm and is used for irrigation and storing water during the hot season,” Col Khoeun said.
. .
He noted that he did not know whether it was necessary to erect a fence surrounding the pond to prevent future incidents, adding that he has not been in touch with the farm owner, who he says does not live in the village, to inform of the deaths.
“I want to call on all parents to pay attention to their children and not let them go far from home because we do not know what can happen to them when they are far from their parents,” Col Khoeun said.
In March, three children drowned in a pond in Kampong Thom province’s Prasat Balaing district. Police in Kampong Thom province said that the three children drowned as they were playing in the pond.
District chief of police Colonel Phal Phoeurn said at the time that their parents did not know that their children had gone to play in a pond, located roughly 100 metres away from their village.
