[India]: Madhya Pradesh: Farmers reap rich dividends by cultivating cashewnut with other crops in Betul

Betul: White gold i.e. cashewnut is now being grown in Madhya Pradesh. More than 250 farmers of Betul district are cultivating cashew nuts. This year the farmers have done well. The Cashew Board of the Government of India and scientists associated with several horticultural areas have termed Betul district as the most suitable for producing cashew nuts.

Cashew production has started in 400 acres: At present, cashew production has started in 400 acres of the district. It will be increased to 5000 acres in the next five years. Businessman Nandu Agarwal said that this season he has bought 2,000 kgs of cashew nuts. At the same time, the farmers have also sold cashew nuts to traders of Bhopal, Indore and Nagpur.
Soil suitable for cashew nuts: The lalburra soil of Shahpur and Ghodadongri of Betul district is very suitable and proving to be a boon for producing cashew nuts. Farmers from these areas, who are constantly hit by the weather, have taken a commercial approach. Besides traditional cultivation of soyabean, paddy, wheat, they have also turned towards cashew cultivation. The special thing is that the farmers are also using barren land around the farms for the cultivation of cashews.
Soyabean, maize and vegetables also being grown with cashewnuts: Farmers Maniram, Singulal and Sukhiya Bai of Nishana village in Shahpur block told that they have planted 15 trees each of cashew in their fields from which they are able to cultivate about 12 to 15 kg cashew nuts per tree in the season. They are growing soyabean, maize and vegetables along with cashew nuts in their fields. Now seeing the growing production of cashew nuts, preparations are being made by the Directorate of Cashew Research to organize a Cashew Buyer-Seller Meet.
Up to 15 kg cashew nuts from one tree: Around 15 kgs of cashewnut is being produced from one cashew tree in the season. This raw cashew is being sold for Rs 100 per kg. About 150 trees can be grown in one-acre land. Accordingly, farmers can earn Rs 2 lakh 25 thousand from one-acre land.
