The forum is supported by the Competitive Cashew Initiative (Comcashew) of the German Cooperation (GIZ) and the Cashew Casing Support Project in Mali (PAFAM). This edition of FOCAS will bring together various stakeholders from the public and private sectors as well as development partners in the subregion to discuss issues of common interest to the Sahel countries.
The forum will include sessions in which experts from the cashew value chain, particularly the Sahel, will give presentations on key topics. For this purpose, several panels are on the FOCAS program. The first will focus on the evolution of cashew production in the Sahel region: state of play, potential and market trends. On this point, an overview of the evolution of cashew production in the sub-region and prospects for 2019 is planned. New techniques and research to improve and increase production in the Sahel (grafting, polyclonal seeds, etc.) will be developed.
In panel 2, it is a question of seizing the economic opportunities of the local cashew processing: how to make the transformation more competitive in the Sahel?
Finally, participants will become immersed in "how to organize the private-public dialogue and create a common framework for good governance". The importance of the public sector in the organization and supervision of the cashew nut sector will be explored with the case of Guinea Bissau as an example.
In addition, participants will have the opportunity to do business-to-business meetings, visit an exhibition of cashew products and services and engage in networking for two days. The third day will be reserved for a field visit to a cashew nursery.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Lassine Dembélé, representing the Minister, presided over the opening. He had, along with him, the president of the Interofession of the cashew industry of Mali (IPROFAM), Ibrahim Togola, the representative of Comcashew, Dr. Bernard Agbo, and the president of the ACA, Florentino Nanque.
