[Germany]: Researchers Have Synthesis Organic Cashew Nut Shell Liquid as an UV Filter

August 30, 2019

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) researchers in Germany, in collaboration with associates from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and the University of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, succeeded in utilizing cashew nut shell liquid abbreviated as CNSL as an alternative to petroleum in organic synthesis. Their goal was the event of a sustainable synthesis of soluble organic UV filters.

The ultraviolet (UV) area of solar radiation is a possible health risk for people and livestock. In-depth exposure might lead to unanticipated aging of the skin and even forms of cancer. Moreover, the devastating power of natural UV radiation also can damage coatings, paints, and even plastics. One option to prevent radiation-induced injury is to make use of chemical UV filters. These can both be mineral pigments such as titanium dioxide (titanium white) or organic compounds comprising of carbon atoms. Both are used as active ingredients in sunscreen, as paint additives, or as additives for the supplies to be preserved.

Currently, each lesson of UV filters is under fire for different reasons. The toxicity of among the natural filters in the direction of aquatic life is problematic. Unfortunately, virtually all natural filters and the overwhelming majority of all different organic chemicals around are being produced from petroleum.

The applying of those chemically well-defined UV absorbers produced on this trend in sunscreens, their compatibility with human skin, and their results on various life forms stay to be investigated. This research, however, is beyond the extent of the existing project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research -BMBF, Germany and the South African associate organization NRF and will require the collaboration with industry.
